Investigating complications of IVC Filter In Jupiter, Florida

The Law Offices of Vastola & Associates are investigating cases involving complications of Inferior Vena Cava Filters, commonly known as IVC Filters.

Recently, the FDA has issued a safety communication in regards to Inferior Vena Cava Filters.  In the report, the FDA reveals that they have received reports of adverse events and problems associated with IVC Filters.  These complications include:

  • Device Migration,
  • Filter Fracture,
  • Embolization,
  • Perforation of the vein,
  • Difficulty removing the device.

In addition to these complications, others can arise depending on the length of use of the device.  These include deep vein thrombosis and IVC occlusion.

Also, there has been a recall on Cordis Optease Retrievable IVC Filters.

The FDA recommends the removal of the device once the patient no longer needs protection from a pulmonary embolism.  They also are encouraging all physicians involved in the treatment and follow up on patients who receive the device to strongly consider the risks and benefits of removal of the device.

How does an IVC Filter Work?

IVC Filters are designed to help prevent pulmonary emboli.  It’s a small cone-shaped device implanted in the Inferior Vena Cava, a large vein that carries de-oxygenated blood from the lower extremities to heart and lungs.  The most common cause for a pulmonary embolism is a blood clot that forms in the deep veins of the body, becomes loose, and travels to an artery in the lung.  Almost all blood clots that cause pulmonary emboli are formed in the deep veins of the leg.  As such, the placement of IVC filters is crucial and strategic.
